Reddit is getting a For You feed
Reddit is switching up its homepage feeds. The company announced today that it’s going to start offering a “new feed experience” that includes both a Following feed to show you posts from subreddits you follow and a For You feed that includes posts from your subreddits and “recommendations related to your interests.” You may already have the new feeds — I actually noticed them on my account yesterday.
It’s a big shift for the platform, but not an entirely surprising one, as Reddit hasn’t been shy about wanting to switch up the homepage. Earlier this year, the company announced it would be deprecating r/all, which surfaced posts that were popular across the platform, as part of its “ongoing efforts to simplify Reddit and improve Home feed personalization.”
For You, in my one day of using it, is more targeted than r/all was — as I write this post, I see suggested posts from the r/Silksong, r/iPhoneDuo, and r/decomps subreddits high up in the feed, which I don’t subscribe to but have checked in on recently. I prefer the Following feed, though, as I feel like I have more control over what shows up there. Thankfully, Reddit remembers which feed you used last, so if I close out my Reddit tab on the Following feed and come back to Reddit later, it opens up again on Following.
“This new feed experience is a first step in helping drive discovery that leads to something novel and relevant — an idea, a connection, a unique perspective, or even a new interest,” Reddit says. “A more human internet is not just something you sit back and watch, it is something you find value in and want to participate in.”
If you want the old-school Reddit homepage experience, where you can sort your homepage by “best,” “hot,” “new,” “rising,” and “controversial,” you can use “Old Reddit,” which is available at old.reddit.com or in settings. If you want to continue to have access to Old Reddit, though, you should log in to it soon, as the company plans to cut back access to it unless you’ve used it recently.
