MSI’s new pink laptop shows that powerful PCs can be stylish, too

MSI has announced the availability of its Rose Pink Prestige 14 laptop, which comes with a pink sleeve bag, pink mouse, and pink keychain. It’s available now from Newegg and Amazon.

This version of the Prestige 14 is the same in terms of specs as what was released late last year. MSI says it’s designed for content creators, and it comes equipped with a discrete GPU (Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 1650 Max Q) and a 4K display. It also has Intel’s 6-core 10th Gen Core i7 U series processor, Thunderbolt 3 support, and a microSD card reader. The difference is that this laptop is very pink.

MSI isn’t the first company to release a pink laptop around Valentine’s Day. Close to a year ago, Razer announced a limited edition pink version of its Blade Stealth laptop, and it launched a number of pink peripherals, including versions of its Basilisk mouse, Huntsman keyboard, Kraken headset, and Seiren X microphone. The Prestige 14 isn’t marketed as a gaming laptop, but its GPU should be able to handle most games, though certainly not at 4K resolution.

Like Razer, MSI hasn’t explicitly said that it’s pandering to female customers with this color scheme. But that’s something of a safe assumption to make, especially given the look of the laptop sleeve, which is shaped and decorated like a traditional purse.

It’s also refreshing to see the laptop space moving in this direction. Powerful gaming laptops from the likes of Razer and MSI have a habit of looking a bit, well, obnoxious — they’re targeting the stereotypical gamer, after all — and laptops for creators often look more understated. (Look to products like the iPad Pro, the Dell XPS 15, the ThinkPad P Series, or other members of the Prestige lineup.) There’s also no “pink tax” at play here; the Rose Pink model is the same price as the other Prestige 14 colors with the same specs.

There are plenty of gamers and creators out there, of all genders, who favor a more “feminine” aesthetic, and — pandering or not — there’s no reason they shouldn’t have laptops to match their tastes.
