‘It was very strange and felt so wrong’: The Girlfriend’s steamiest scenes have its cast questioning absolutely everything
When I first read the brief synopsis of Prime Video‘s The Girlfriend, I knew it was going to be a steamy watch. New on the Amazon streamer in September 2025, the series follows the bond of a (frankly, too close) mother and son that gets disrupted when his new girlfriend arrives on the scene.
Thanks to the thriller’s dual perspectives in each episode, we’ve got absolutely no idea who’s version of the truth is the real one. Daniel (Laurie Davidson) is left as the piggy in the middle of the mess… but not before he reaps the benefits of having an incredibly hot girlfriend in Cherry (Olivia Cooke).
But are they always benefits? There’s no doubt that the new Amazon show is one of the most erotic of the year, but sometimes that becomes too close for comfort. As you’ll see in the below trailer, Laura (Robin Wright) is actually present in one particular sex scene, and that’s something that immediately felt “so wrong” to Davidson and Cooke.
The Girlfriend’s steamy scenes with “fake mommy” Robin Wright “felt so wrong” for cast
Spoilers for The Girlfriend ahead.
“This is the thing – I spent the first four days building a mother and son relationship with Robin,” Davidson explains. “She’s directing me at the same time. And than the next day, Robin’s still directing but we’re shooting Liv and I in a very intimate scene.
“Not the sort of thing you want your mom in the room for! I found that very strange, because it felt very, very wrong. Obviously, it was an incredibly professional set, but it was like… huh. I don’t think you should be here.”
As you might expect, The Girlfriend‘s intimate scenes can be seen from the get-go, as Cherry and Daniel meet and quickly become infatuated with one another. Without spoiling too much, Laura quickly becomes a presence in these in multiple ways, from possible imaginations to, well, unfortunate timing.

Of course, this is made all the more strange by Wright being behind the camera as well. With the cast lavishing praise on its fearless leader, it was having this dynamic that made shooting the scenes much more fun than usual for Cooke.
“It’s more exposing than usual,” she tells me. “Though I don’t remember there being one day where that felt like too much, and that was quite fun. We all got on so well, we were such a tight-knit trio.
“None of these scenes ever felt too hard to access or reach. I’ve never been directed by my fellow actor before, and that chain of command becomes a whole lot shorter. Robin’s even able to direct me just through the way she’s performing. I loved it. It made everything so much more energetic and efficient.”
All six episodes of The Girlfriend will be released on Prime Video on September 10.
