UAE overtakes South Korea to rank first in mobile broadband speed test in January

The UAE has overtaken South Korea for the first time to rank first in the global mobile broadband speed test in January, according to Ookla’s Global Speed Test Index.

The Emirate overtook Qatar and was behind South Korea in December.

In the UAE, the average download speed was 87.01Mbps compared to 86.77Mbps in December while the upload speed was 24.51Mbps compared to 25.55Mbps in December.

The global average download speed is 31.95Mbps in January compared to 32.01Mbps in December while the upload speed is 11.32Mbps compared to 12.02Mbps in December.

The global speed test compares internet speed data from around the world every month. Data for the index comes from the hundreds of millions of tests taken by real people using speed test every month.

The average download speed in South Korea in January was 83.90Mbps compared to 103.18Mbps in December while the upload speed was 17.62Mbps compared to 20.55Mbps in December.

When compared to other Gulf Cooperation Countries, Qatar remained third with a download speed of 82.59Mbps, followed by Saudi Arabia ranked one place higher at 12th with a download speed of 57.46Mbps, Kuwait jumping three places higher at 25th with a download speed of 47.23Mbps, Oman falling three places to 36th with a download speed of 40.63Mbps, Bahrain jumping seven places to rank 40th with a download speed of 37.06Mbps.

Oman falls lower

In the fixed broadband space, UAE climbs one place higher to 29th with an average download speed of 93.19Mbps while the average upload speed is 45.37Mbps.

In December, UAE had an average download speed of 90.57Mbps while the average upload speed is 38.78Mbps.

The global average download speed improved from 73.58Mbps in December to 74.32Mbps in January while the upload speed also improved from 40.39Mbps in December to 40.83Mbps in January.

The top three countries are Singapore, Hong Kong and Monaco, same as in December.

In Singapore, the average download speed is 202.21Mbps while it is 169.78Mbps in Hong Kong and it is 162.65Mbps in Monaco.

When compared to other Gulf Cooperation Countries, Qatar was unchanged to rank 40th with a download speed of 76.08Mbps compared to 73.94Mbps in December, followed by Kuwait ranking 44th with a download speed of 69.04Mbps compared to 65.92Mbps in December, Saudi Arabia jumped three places higher to 50th with 59.30Mbps compared to 52.93Mbps in December, Oman fell seven places lower to 73rd with 36.97Mbps compared to 42.22Mbps in December, Bahrain fell one place lower to 96th with a download speed of 26.98Mbps, same as in December.
