Today’s Wordle answer (game #1475)

  • NYT average score: 4.8
  • My score: 6
  • WordleBot’s score: 5
  • My skill score: 63

  • My start word performance: STORK (251 remaining answers)

  • Tomorrow’s start word: STEAL

Today’s Wordle answer (game #1475) is… POPPY.

Wow! So, where to start here, then?

How about the fact that POPPY is the equal seventh toughest Wordle of 2025 so far? It’s behind only ROWER (5.6), EAGER (5.5), FUZZY (5.1), WAFER (5.0), KRILL (5.0) and HAZEL (4.9), and level with GOODY, BASTE and TAFFY at 4.8.

Or I could talk about the fact that it’s one of only 20 answers out of the 2,309 original solutions that contain three of the same letter.

We’ve had eight of these so far, in the form of SISSY (right at the start, game #2), ERROR (#71), FLUFF (#382), MUMMY (#491, average score 5.8), DADDY (#833, average 4.9), NANNY (#714, 5.2) SASSY (#878, 5.0) and MOMMY (#1208, 5.0). The last of those was not on the original word list, so technically POPPY is the eighth and there are at least a dozen more to come.

All have been difficult. I don’t have scores for SISSY, ERROR or FLUFF, but including POPPY the others have an average of 5.1 between them. That’s not surprising; a repeated letter generally makes Wordle harder, so it stands to reason that a triple will be worse still.

The other big talking point, for me at least, is that I scored a six. This was something of a disaster, given that I scored fives on Monday and Tuesday too; yesterday’s three already feels like the abberation.

WordleBot certainly didn’t rate my play, awarding me only 63 for skill – and that’s fair enough. My opening STORK had given me a yellow O and left 251 options, but my follow-up YOUNG was a decent choice that turned the O green and confirmed there was a Y in it (which I knew would almost certainly go at the end).

I now had 30 options, and played CALVE to rule in/out the likes of FOLLY/JOLLY/HOLLY/DOLLY, plus COYLY, COVEY, LOWLY, DOILY and a few others. This worked well enough too, and cut the shortlist to seven despite not giving me any new letters.

The problem was that I only found three of them: HOBBY, HOWDY and DOWDY, plus MOMMY – which I knew had been a past Wordle answer, so dismissed it.

That skewed my thinking, because I went with HOBBY thinking it would guarantee a five at worst. When it wasn’t right, I thought DOWDY was now the only possible answer, and so played it next – only to be stunned when the D and W both failed to change color.

I now had only one guess left, and no idea what the answer was. I could see that MOMMY fit, but was certain it had been an answer before. Might the NYT be about to repeat a solution? Surely not!

I came pretty close to playing it again anyway, just in case, but ultimately decided to keep trying letter combinations and eventually stumbled upon POPPY as a possibility. I played that next with a huge sigh of relief, albeit also a big helping of self-recriminations.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #1474)

In a different time zone where it’s still Wednesday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #1474, too.

  • Wordle yesterday had vowels in two places.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

  • The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was I.

I is only the 19th most common starting letter in Wordle, and just 34 of the original 2,309 answers begin with it.

  • There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

  • The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was R.

R is a very common letter to end a Wordle answer – it’s actually the 4th most common there, behind E, Y and T.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #1474)

  • NYT average score: 3.6
  • My score: 3
  • WordleBot’s score: 3
  • My skill score: 94
  • My luck score: 81
  • My start word performance: FREER (43 remaining answers)
  • WordleBot’s start word performance: CRANE (3)
  • Tomorrow’s start word: STORK

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #1474) was… INCUR.

Ah, the relief of a three after successive fives, is there any sweeter feeling? Well, yes – for instance a two after successive sixes. But I’m quibbling; this was a good day.

INCUR does not appear to be a difficult Wordle; it has an average score of 3.6 at the time of writing. However, some of that will doubtless be due to the performance of some of the best Wordle start words.

CRANE, the ‘Bot’s top choice overall, left only three options – which I think were INCUR, SCORN and RUNIC, though that is a guess. IRATE, which is a relatively popular choice albeit not in the top 10 best options, left only two – the answer plus IVORY.

I had a few more to contend with, after my opening FREER left 43 possible solutions despite only giving me a green R.

The fact that it was green at the end of the answer, but without an E before it, meant I knew I was looking at an AR, OR, IR or UR word. There are not too many of these, certainly compared to ER. OR is the next most likely, with 34 answers, while AR is on 20, UR on nine and IR on seven.

I wanted to cover off the first two of those on my second guess, but also wanted to include some common consonants. I spent ages looking for a good word, and eventually decided to play COLAS – which is not a choice I’ve ever made before, but which I may do again, because it worked quite nicely.

In fact, that’s downplaying it – it worked brilliantly, giving me a yellow C but ruling out the other letters. Amazingly, this now left INCUR as the only possible answer, so I was able to score my very welcome three.

What is Wordle?

If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2025.

We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Games app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.

12. The NYT has added in some of its own words, that weren’t in that list of 2,309 solutions. More will undoubtedly come over the next few years.
