W is a fairly average letter when it comes to starting an answer. There are 82 solutions that begin with a W, with means that it ranks 13th – so right in the middle of the alphabet.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #1471) is… WITTY.
I’ve not really been at my best in Wordle lately, a combination of a very busy day job (I write this column outside of work hours, because I enjoy it) and the near-relentless heat here in the UK that makes it hard to think, hard to sleep, hard to do anything except eat ice-cream.
Seriously – I know that 29°C / 83°F doesn’t sound that hot, but the UK is really not cut out for this kind of weather, and neither am I; I’d always take a crisp winter day over a hot one.
Maybe I’m just making excuses, but the heat has coincided with a poor run; the last time I scored a 99 for skill was way back in late May, for FOLIO. I’ve had a couple of 98s during that time, and plenty in the mid-90s, but the ‘perfect’ game had escaped me.
Well, until now – because according to WordleBot, I didn’t put a foot wrong today. Other than my first guess, which was chosen at random, every attempt was either exactly what the ‘Bot would have done, or as near as makes no difference.
I still ‘only’ scored a four, though – which points towards this being a tricky answer, as does its overall average of 4.4.
Then again, you could probably tell that this was going to be a difficult one even without knowing what I scored, or what the global average was. After all, it begins with an uncommon W, contains a repeated T and has several similarly spelled alternatives.
The latter complication will have hurt many games today. DITTY, KITTY and BITTY were all played by large numbers on guesses three and four, while the likes of FIFTY, MINTY and DIRTY all made plenty of appearances too.
KITTY was the one that cost me a guess; without it, I’d have scored a lovely three. But given that my opening IDYLL had left 62 options, getting it home in three more moves was a decent result. I wouldn’t personally describe it as ‘perfect’, but if the ‘Bot wants to do so then who am I to argue…

S is the most common starting letter in the game, featuring in 365 of Wordle’s 2,309 answers. In fact, it’s almost twice as likely to begin an answer as the next most common starting letter, C.
There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.

STUMP is a pleasing word to say, isn’t it? Go on, try it: stump! Versatile, too – as well as the obvious tree-related meaning, to ‘stump’ someone can be to frustrate, which Wordle regularly does when it stumps me.
I wasn’t stumped by this game, though, solving it in an adequate four. Adequate rather than impressive, but I had a poor start and got a 93 skill score, so I don’t think I did too much wrong either.
SAVVY was definitely not the optimal opening guess. WordleBot described it as a “bold choice” and said it was “not what I would have picked”; me neither, ‘Bot, but it’s what my random-word generator told me I had to play.
SAVVY did at least give me the S at the start, as well as ruling out the A and Y (and two Vs, but that was less helpful). I now had 242 choices, the ‘Bot said later, but focused purely on playing common letters.
Actually, that’s not entirely true: I focused on playing common letters that pair well with an S, specifically C, L and N, which I assembled into CLONE.
This was a bit unlucky and drew a complete blank – but I had now cut the shortlist to 29.
With eight letters ruled out, including six of the top 10, I was now having to luck further for my inspiration. THUMP included four more letters that regularly go after an S; surely one of these would change color?
Indeed they did: four of them, in fact. What’s more, three went green, meaning that with my already-green S I now knew exactly what the answer had to be. That was of course STUMP, so I scored a rollercoaster four.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2025.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Games app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
12. The NYT has added in some of its own words, that weren’t in that list of 2,309 solutions. More will undoubtedly come over the next few years.
