Cash App users have a week left to claim part of a $15 million settlement
Current or former Cash App users who have used the service since 2018 have until next week to claim part of a $15 million settlement that Cash App Investing (and owner Block Inc.) reached as part of a class action lawsuit, The Hill reports. The lawsuit alleged that the companies were negligent in responding to their customers after a former employee had accessed user accounts without permission.
You’re eligible to claim in the settlement if your account was accessed without your permission or if you have had unauthorized or fraudulent withdrawals or transfers of funds in your account. The eligibility window is August 23rd, 2018, through the notice date of August 20th, 2024.
You can file a claim via the settlement notice website for up to $2,500 “for reimbursement of out-of-pocket losses, lost time, and\or transaction losses,” according to the settlement agreement document. You need to submit the claim no later than November 18th, 2024. You’ll also have to provide third-party documentation that supports your claim. The settlement does not specify a timetable for when to expect payouts.
You can also exclude yourself from the settlement by the deadline, allowing you to retain your right to sue Block or be part of a future lawsuit related to the claims in this class action.
The settlement website lists that Block and Cash App Investments “made misrepresentations, and breached other obligations to their users” for:
(1) a data security incident that Cash App Investing disclosed in April 2022
(2) a data security incident that Block disclosed in October 2023
(3) alleged unauthorized, and fraudulent withdrawals and transfers of funds to or from, and complaint and error resolution processes associated with, Cash App accounts and linked accounts.
