OpenAI is giving ChatGPT free users unlimited text chats
OpenAI is making a big change for ChatGPT users on its free and Go tiers: starting next week, users on those tiers will be able to have unlimited text chats with the chatbot, according to OpenAI. Right now, you may run into rate limits if you do too many text chats on those tiers, but those limits, just for text, will be going away soon. Messages that include things like file uploads and images will continue to have limits.
Next week, OpenAI is also adding a “Think” button for free and Go users that they can use to “access higher reasoning for harder questions.” This week, for those users, the company is additionally upgrading ChatGPT’s default AI model to the recently-released GPT-5.6 Luna.
For Plus and Pro subscribers, GPT-5.6 Sol in ChatGPT is being updated to be “more reliable with facts,” OpenAI says. “The new GPT‑5.6 Sol is designed to make fewer mistakes — especially when answers depend on dates, numbers, sources, rules, or assumptions — by better using the sources it finds to answer your question.” The updated GPT-5.6 Sol will also give you “more direct responses” with “tighter formatting,” and OpenAI says ChatGPT will “avoid extra detail when it does not help.”
Plus and Pro subscribers can also use a new slider to decide “how much thought ChatGPT puts into an answer.” Both the updated GPT-5.6 Sol and the slider will be available starting Thursday.
