Mercedes’ George Russell is in fourth, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc fifth and Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso sixth. Lewis Hamilton was knocked in the first round of qualifying for the third straight grand prix, saying he felt an “unbearable amount of anger and rage”.
Norris should arguably have wrapped this up weeks ago but has struggled to get over the line. In Qatar last weekend, McLaren attempted to get the Briton above Piastri, denying the latter of victory at the expense of the Verstappen’s win.
The Dutchman, though, has been nothing short of extraordinary, picking up 213 points from a possible 257 over the past nine Grands Prix to put the pressure on the McLaren newbies.
“Incredibly happy to be in first,” Verstappen said after Saturday’s qualfiying. “That’s the only thing we can do – try to maximize everything with the car.”
Will team tactics come into effect? If Verstappen’s leading and Norris is behind Piastri, needing a place to take the title, don’t bet against it…
