Forget the Dyson V16 Piston Animal, the Gen5detect for AU$949 is the better buy
Dyson is, of course, known for making some of the best cordless vacuums. And we all expected the company’s latest release, the silly-named V16 Piston Animal to be its best model yet bar none. With its whopping 315 air watts of suction, it sure is the most powerful Dyson yet but, as you’ll learn from our Dyson V16 Piston Animal review, it’s not the all-star machine it’s hyped up to be.
If you want a new Dyson, then we think your money is going to be much better spent on the Gen5detect, especially now it’s dropped to AU$949 (from AU$1,549).
How are we so confident in our claim that the Gen5detect is the better buy? Partly because we’ve previously found it to be a top performer, but also because we recently conducted some side-by-side tests with both models mentioned, along with the V15 Detect, whereby we discovered that Dyson’s latest release performed the poorest.
We’ve also conducted a second test, pitting just the Gen5detect against the V16 Piston Animal, and again, the older model came out on top.
We admit we were surprised by the results, but they prove that more suction power doesn’t necessarily result in improved performance.
As we said in our Dyson Gen5detect review, this stick vacuum delivers “a powerful yet quiet clean on all types of floors” and it’s able to tackle hair and built-up dirt “very well” thanks to its 262 air watts of power. Our reviewer loved the dirt-illuminating light on the Fluffy Optic floorhead too, as it’s the brightest one Dyson has made, swapping the laser for an LED, meaning it can be clearly seen during the daytime and it has a broader beam than before.
What’s especially impressive about the Gen5detect, however, is its battery life. Offering up to 70 minutes on a full charge, you’ll likely find you’ll rarely need to plug it back into the mains in the middle of a cleaning session. And, of course, being a Dyson, the Gen5detect removes 99.9% of dust and allergens, plus a whole-machine HEPA filtration system means it’s all kept inside the unit.
We can’t be sure how long this deal will last as this price is rather enticing, so if you’ve been eyeing up one of Dyson’s most powerful vacuums but haven’t wanted to pay top dollar, now’s your chance.
